Materials in Lost Ark are the resources players can find and gather in the game. These Materials can then be used to craft a wide variety of Weapons, Armor, Accesories, and more by using Craftsmen services. Materials can be found scattered throughout. where players need to use Tools in order to be able to obtain most of them, Gathering materials is closely related to player's Life Skills.

How to obtain materials?
Materials can be obtained by harvesting or gathering any resource such as harvesting wood, mining a vein, gathering plants, etc. This will give the corresponding raw Materials, that then can be processed by certain Npcs to create a finished item, namely Weapons, Armor, Potions and more!
What is the best place to farm materials?
Platinum Fields, are the best place to obtain materials in Lost Ark. Basically, Platinum Fields is an instanced area filled with resources for players to gather. In order to access this zone, players can access from any capital hub and need a special ticket called Entrance Ticket: Platinum Field. You can find these tickets in the world, while doing different trade skills, (they are random drop). Note that the Platinum Fields have different tile sets, and you can get different resources from each of them. Keep this in mind when you are selecting which one to visit.
Note that here players are not rewarded by gathering or harvesting materials, but also their consumption does not consume any energy.
Life Skills Tools
Lost Ark provides you basic tools at the beginning for you to start and be able to improve at your Life Skills. These tools are low-quality Tools that will get you so far, after you will need to upgrade them. Upgrading them is important to be more efficient while gathering, allowing you to be faster at it, or obtain more resources when harvesting.
Note that tools will require to be repaired after extended use, and eventually their max durability will decrease. So it is advised to save the upgraded tools to use for the hardest resources.
Energy Gauge
Players have an energy gauge in Lost Ark. This energy gauge depletes as you perform any Life skill. Once it completely depletes, you won't be able to gather any resource. Note that you will be able to restore that energy in time or by the use of certain potions.
Leveling Life Skills
Performing Life Skills in the wild, increases your ability in such gathering or harvesting ability. This will ultimately lead you to be able to obtain more and more Materials. Even allowing you to obtain them in harder to find rarities, making them exceptional to use as powerful Weapons, Armor, etc.

I really appreciate the help with Life skills! One thing I'm missing, though, are the zone locations for each specific life skill. For example:
I'm currently level 43 (Bard) with a ship and continuing the main story. When I want to perform a specific gathering function, I can never remember which zones are "Best" for that (like hunting), so I spend a ton of time warping to each area and wandering around. I'd love to see map areas added to this to help me (and others) out!
